The District Mental Health Program (DMHP) in Nagpur is a pioneering initiative between the Government of Maharashtra (GoM) and Gramin Adivasi Samaj Vikas Sansthan (GASVS). The program aims to provide comprehensive community mental health services and integrate mental health care with general health-care delivery systems in the district of Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Program Context
Nagpur district, comprising 13 blocks and a total population of 4,653,570, faces significant mental health challenges. According to the first comprehensive mental health survey conducted in 2016, the mental health morbidity rate among individuals aged 18 and above stands at 10.6%. This translates to nearly 493,278 individuals in Nagpur requiring mental health interventions and support.
Objectives
- Availability and Accessibility of Mental Health Care: Ensure that mental health care services are available and accessible to the entire population.
- Integration of Mental Health Knowledge: Encourage the application of mental health knowledge within general health care and social development initiatives.
- Community Participation: Promote community involvement in mental health service development and stimulate efforts toward self-help within the community.

GASVS is at the forefront of implementing the DMHP in Nagpur, working closely with communities to build awareness, facilitate early detection of mental health conditions, and provide care closer to home. Our approach is multifaceted and involves:
- Awareness Building: Conducting educational campaigns and workshops to raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and promote understanding within the community.
- Early Detection and Intervention: Training healthcare providers and community workers to recognize early signs of mental illness and refer individuals to appropriate services for timely intervention.
- Accessible Care: Establishing mental health care services within existing healthcare facilities to ensure that individuals can receive treatment and support without having to travel long distances.
- Support and Rehabilitation: Developing and strengthening pathways for the rescue, recovery, and rehabilitation of persons with mental illness (PwMI), promoting their social inclusion and enhancing their quality of life.
Impact and Future Vision
The DMHP in Nagpur is more than just a program; it is a lifeline for thousands of individuals who have been suffering in silence. By ensuring the availability and accessibility of mental health care, promoting community participation, and integrating mental health knowledge into general health care, we are laying the foundation for a healthier and more inclusive society. Our efforts will not only improve the lives of individuals with mental illness but also strengthen the overall health and well-being of the Nagpur community.
