District Mental Health Program (DMHP) Chhindwara

Mental illness, shrouded in stigma and myths, often remains hidden in our communities, depriving individuals of the support and care they deserve. Recognizing this challenge, Gramin Adivasi Samaj Vikas Sansthan (GASVS) actively engages in the District Mental Health Program (DMHP) in Chhindwara. DMHP aims to provide essential mental health services at the grassroots level, ensuring that individuals receive the care they need in their own communities.

Our Approach

To combat stigma and raise awareness about mental health, GASVS employs a multifaceted approach, utilizing various channels to reach communities effectively. Through engaging street plays, interactive discussions, workshops, and the distribution of informational materials, GASVS brings the conversation about mental health into the forefront of community discourse.

These awareness programs are not confined to traditional venues but extend to diverse community spaces such as schools, colleges, primary health centres (PHCs), Anganwadi centres, police stations, temples, and dargahs. By meeting people where they are, GASVS ensures that no corner of the community is untouched by the conversation about mental health. GASVS recognizes the importance of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) and Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) in challenging misconceptions and fostering acceptance. Through a systematic approach, GASVS implements IEC/BCC programs strategically, understanding community behaviour and influencers to bring about meaningful change.

Driving Behavioral Change

The tangible impact of GASVS’s efforts is reflected in the production and distribution of educational materials such as posters, banners, stickers, pamphlets, and other informative resources at PHC levels. Additionally, eye-catching wall paintings and hoardings in key locations further reinforce the message of mental health awareness. Leveraging modern communication channels, GASVS also utilizes platforms like WhatsApp, newspapers, and television to reach a wider audience. By dispelling myths and fostering understanding, GASVS’s IEC team plays a pivotal role not only in promoting mental health awareness but also in catalysing a shift in societal attitudes. This concerted effort leads to an increased demand for mental health services, ultimately bringing about positive behavioural change within individuals and communities.

As GASVS continues its dedicated efforts in the DMHP in Chhindwara, it underscores the importance of community-driven initiatives in addressing mental health challenges. Through strategic awareness programs and proactive engagement, GASVS is not only breaking stigmas but also building a more compassionate and inclusive society where mental health is prioritized and supported.
