Disability Rehabilitation and Resource Centre (DDRC)

The Disability Rehabilitation and Resource Centre (DDRC) is an initiative by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. This scheme aims to provide comprehensive services to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) at the grassroots level by creating infrastructure and building capacity at the district level. The program focuses on awareness generation, rehabilitation, training, and guidance for grassroots level functionaries, ensuring that PwDs receive the support they need.

In January 2017, GASVS was selected as the implementation agency for the DDRC program in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh. This role involves delivering essential services such as identifying PwDs, raising awareness, early detection of disabilities, and providing therapeutic services, including physiotherapy and speech therapy. Additionally, GASVS facilitates the issuance of disability certificates, bus passes, and other necessary concessions or facilities for PwDs.

Key Services Provided by DDRC through GASVS:

  • Awareness and Counselling Services:

GASVS conducted community outreach programs to educate PwDs and their families about available services and support mechanisms. These sessions had provided crucial information about disability rights, government schemes, and ways to access various benefits, ensuring that PwDs and their families are well-informed and empowered.

  • Education Services:

We focused on the cognitive and social development of PwDs through tailored educational programs. These initiatives aimed to integrate PwDs into mainstream education systems and provide specialized training to enhance their learning capabilities and social skills.

  • Therapeutic Services:

Our DDRC offered comprehensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy services. These therapies are designed to help reduce the limitations and restrictions caused by disabilities, improving the overall quality of life for PwDs. Our dedicated professionals worked closely with each individual to create personalized treatment plans that address their specific needs.

  • Convergence and Linkages

GASVS actively developed convergence and linkages with various government schemes and programs. This approach ensured that PwDs can seamlessly access multiple benefits, ranging from healthcare and education to social security and employment opportunities. We had collaborated with different government departments and agencies to create a robust support network for PwDs.

Impact of DDRC in Sukma District

Since GASVS began implementing the DDRC program in Sukma, the impact has been significant. We have successfully identified and supported numerous PwDs, providing them with the services they need to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. For example, in 2023 alone, we facilitated the issuance of over 200 disability certificates and provided therapeutic services to more than 150 PwDs, enabling them to improve their physical and mental health.
