The Community Mental Health and Inclusion Program is a flagship initiative of Gramin Adivasi Samaj Vikas Sansthan (GASVS), dedicated to fostering psychologically sustainable communities. Since 2011, Gramin Adivasi Samaj Vikas Sansthan (GASVS) has been at the forefront of raising awareness about the rights of People Living with Mental Illness (PLwMI), this program embodies GASVS’s vision of creating inclusive and emotionally supportive environments for all individuals, especially those with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities. This innovative program not only provided crucial support but also shed light on mental health issues in the region.
Multi-Level Actions for Community Care
Through concerted multi-level actions, GASVS is spearheading the transformation of communities into caring ecosystems. By addressing the inequalities faced by Persons Living with Mental Illness (PLwMI) within these communities, we are striving towards the goal of community transformation. Our approach is not merely about raising awareness but actively involving community members in creating solutions and fostering a culture of inclusion and participation.
Scaling Up: The Sanjeevani Community Mental Health Program
Since 2011, GASVS has been at the forefront of raising awareness about the rights of Persons Living with Mental Illness (PLwMI) in society. Supported initially by ‘The HANS Foundation’ and ‘SAARTHAK’, our efforts began with rehabilitation services for this invisible population across 80 villages in the Sausar block. Through our advocacy, we’ve not only facilitated policy activities for their integration but also curtailed human rights violations in places like the ‘Hanuman temple’ complex. From February 2014, we scaled our initiatives to an additional 33 villages. Since April 2020, the program has expanded its reach to 169 villages in the Pandhurna block.
Sanjeevani Community Mental Health Program: A Beacon of Hope
Operational since 2011, the ‘Sanjeevani Community Mental Health Program’ has been a lifeline for communities across Sausar and Pandhurna blocks. This holistic program, implemented in collaboration with local stakeholders and strategically designed to address the root causes of mental health issues and enhance public knowledge about mental health, thus reducing stigma and increasing acceptability of PLwMI within the community, comprises three major components:
- Federation of Caregivers: Establishing a support network for caregivers of PLwMI in Sausar and Pandhurna blocks, fostering a sense of community and mutual assistance.
- Mental Health Resource Centre: Providing essential resources and information to enhance knowledge about mental health issues and promote acceptance and reduce stigma within communities.
- Community-Based Services: Offering accessible and tailored services to address the diverse mental health needs of the community, directly to the doorstep of those who require them, promoting holistic well-being.
Outcomes and Impact of Community Mental Health and Inclusion Program
The Community Mental Health and Inclusion Program is not just about rhetoric; it’s about tangible outcomes. GASVS is working tirelessly to ensure the full inclusion and participation of PLwMI. We recognize that true transformation requires active participation and engagement at every level of society. Through community participation, we are laying the groundwork for sustainable change, where every individual feels valued and included.
Since the inception of the program in 2011, GASVS has witnessed remarkable progress. Over 1127 community members have participated in awareness sessions, with a 30% increase in knowledge about mental health and inclusion. Moreover, the number of reported cases seeking support and assistance has doubled, indicating a growing trust in our services.
The program’s focus extends beyond addressing the symptoms of mental illness; it aims to tackle the root causes and foster community engagement. By enhancing public knowledge and acceptance of mental health issues, GASVS endeavours to reduce stigma and promote inclusivity within society. GASVS is paving the way for a society where mental health is embraced and supported.
