Introduction

Project Manswa, aims to address the mental health needs of rural communities through targeted awareness campaigns, community engagement, and access to essential services. This case study delves into the story of Ratnakar Jogi, a resident of Mehndi village, and highlights the challenges faced by his family in managing his mental health condition.

Case Overview

During a group discussion in Mehndi village, members highlighted concerns regarding Ratnakar. Ratnakar Jogi, a thirty-three-year-old member of a joint family residing in Mehndi village, experienced a gradual decline in his mental health starting in 2018. Initially leading a content life, Ratnakar began exhibiting symptoms such as tremors, sudden collapses, and insomnia, significantly impacting his ability to carry out daily tasks and contribute to the family’s livelihood.

Mr. Devidas, Ratnakar’s brother, shared the family’s ordeal with the community worker, shedding light on the financial and emotional strain they endured in caring for Ratnakar. Despite seeking treatment in Nagpur, the family faced challenges as the initial therapy costs were exorbitant. However, with perseverance and regular therapy sessions, Ratnakar showed signs of improvement, albeit with ongoing medical expenses amounting to Rs. 2,500 per month, adding to the family’s financial burden.

Challenges Faced

The family encountered several challenges in caring for Ratnakar. Financial burdens compounded the situation, with the high initial costs of therapy posing significant strain. Despite a gradual reduction in expenses, ongoing medical costs remained a concern, especially within the context of a joint family structure. Balancing the needs of the family while ensuring Ratnakar’s well-being created a complex dynamic for the caregivers.

Community Support

Recognizing the need for continued support, the community worker recommended Ratnakar’s family to avail the services of the Mental Health Resource Centre (MHRC) operated by the organization. The MHRC offers free medical care and therapy during weekly health camps, alleviating the financial burden on families like Ratnakar’s and ensuring sustained access to treatment.

Outcome and Future Steps

Currently, Ratnakar is steadily progressing and able to engage in work with occasional setbacks managed effectively through medication. The family expressed gratitude for the support provided by Project Manswa and pledged to utilize the resources available at the MHRC for Ratnakar’s ongoing care and well-being.

Conclusion

Ratnakar’s journey underscores the critical role of community-based mental health initiatives in rural areas. By fostering awareness, facilitating access to care, and offering support services, Project Manswa exemplifies a holistic approach to addressing mental health challenges within vulnerable communities, ultimately promoting resilience and well-being.

This case study serves as a testament to the transformative impact of grassroots interventions in enhancing mental health outcomes and fostering inclusive growth across rural landscapes.
