Background
This case study explores the inspiring journey of Mr. Amar Wadode, a 30-year-old individual who is 100% visually impaired and has achieved remarkable success in his personal and professional life. Mr. Wadode holds a Master’s degree in Social Work and currently serves as a Computer Teacher at the Deep Stambh Foundation in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. His journey from a rural village in Koprawadi to becoming a significant advocate for persons with disabilities (PwDs) is a testament to his resilience and the impact of the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program initiated by GASVS.
Introduction to the CBR Program
In April 2007, the Gramin Adivasi Samaj Vikas Sanstha (GASVS) initiated the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program across 22 villages in the Sausar block. During the baseline survey, a young Amar, then 13 years old and in the 6th grade, was identified by the CBR team. Amar’s parents revealed that he was born with low vision, a condition that had progressively worsened. Recognizing the need for support, the CBR team enrolled Amar in their program, assisting him in obtaining a disability certificate and accessing the benefits of the Disability Pension Scheme.
Formation of Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs)
In 2009, the CBR team established the Village Level Disabled Persons Organization (VDPO). Amar, being under 18, was represented by his father in this group. Amar actively participated in various CBR activities, showcasing his leadership and commitment. By 2012, upon reaching adulthood, Amar formally joined the VDPO and soon after, took on the role of treasurer in the Chetna Block Level DPO (BDPO). His involvement extended to addressing issues faced by persons with disabilities (PwDs), advocating for their rights, and networking with government authorities.
Leadership and Growth
Amar’s leadership abilities were further recognized in 2015 when CBR Bangalore recommended him for the position of treasurer in the North Region DPO (NRDPO). A year later, in 2016, he also became a member of the National Level DPO (NDPO), both of which are promoted by Caritas India – CBR. His roles in these organizations amplified his impact, allowing him to contribute significantly to the advocacy and support for PwDs.
Skill Development and Professional Journey
In 2018, with the support of GASVS, Amar attended a three-month personality development course in Bangalore. This training enhanced his English-speaking, basic computer, and communication skills. Upon returning to his village in 2019, Amar began teaching at a private school. Despite losing 100% of his vision in 2021, he adapted by starting an online English coaching program, providing significant fee concessions to students with disabilities. His classes attracted over 50 students, underscoring his dedication to education and inclusivity.
Ongoing Advocacy and Current Role
In 2022, Amar was elected as a member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committees, Nagpur zone. In this role, he has been instrumental in advocating for accessible facilities for PwDs at railway stations and on trains, and he has pushed for railway pass benefits for PwDs.
Currently, Amar serves as a computer teacher at the Deep Stambh Foundation, earning INR 6,000 per month. He remains actively involved in meetings of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committees, continually raising issues pertinent to PwDs. Amar’s proficiency with technology, including computers, mobile phones, and social media, further enhances his ability to advocate and connect with a broader audience.
Conclusion
Amar Wadode’s journey is an inspiring narrative of perseverance and empowerment. His life transformation has been significantly supported by the GASVS CBR program, which he credits for his ability to progress and succeed. He asserts, “If the organization had not existed, I would never have been able to move forward in life. Whatever change has come in my life has been possible only because of the organization.” Amar’s story not only highlights the potential of individuals with disabilities but also emphasises the importance of supportive frameworks in enabling them to achieve their goals. His self-confidence, self-reliance, and commitment to advocacy make him a role model for many, demonstrating the profound impact of community-based initiatives.
