Background
Abhay Wasnik, a 28-year-old resident of Nandudhana forest village in the Sausar block, has demonstrated a remarkable journey of recovery and resilience. Living 25 kilometres from Sausar, Abhay is a graduate who successfully runs both a grocery store and a small-scale poultry business. His family comprises his father, mother, and younger sister, who is currently studying in the 11th grade. Abhay’s mother, Mrs. Asha Wasnik, serves as the Sarpanch of Amla Gram Panchayat, while his father assists in the grocery business.
The Onset of Illness
In 2014, the financial condition of Abhay’s family was dire. His father was severely ill, and his mother had to work as a labourer to support the family. This financial strain took a toll on Abhay, leading to the onset of mental illness. Following a high fever in 2014, Abhay began exhibiting symptoms such as fear, loneliness, insomnia, and auditory hallucinations.
Intervention by Sanjeevani – Community Mental Health Program In 2014, GASVS, with support from NRTT, initiated the Sanjeevani – Mental Health Program in 33 villages of the Sausar block. Abhay was identified as a person with mental illness (PwMI) by a field worker. The Community Mental Health Program (CMHP) team visited Abhay’s home, providing much-needed counselling and suggesting treatment for both Abhay and his father at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Sausar.
Path to Recovery
Abhay and his father commenced their treatments at CHC Sausar under the guidance of the CMHP team. Abhay’s father recovered in 2015, allowing the family to focus on Abhay’s treatment. Regular follow-ups and persistent care from field workers ensured Abhay adhered to his treatment plan. By 2017, Abhay had recovered sufficiently to discontinue his medication, with the psychiatrist’s approval.
A New Beginning
Post-recovery, Abhay resumed his education, completing his graduation in 2020 from the Government College in Sausar. In October 2017, recognizing Abhay’s potential and need for financial stability, GASVS provided livelihood assistance of Rs 10,000 to help him start a grocery shop. Given the village’s limited transportation facilities, Abhay’s business flourished rapidly. Encouraged by this success, Abhay expanded his ventures by starting a small-scale poultry business in 2018. Today, Abhay runs both businesses successfully, earning approximately Rs 15,000 per month. His father actively supports him in these ventures. The Wasnik family has garnered significant respect and influence within their community. In 2022, Abhay’s mother, Mrs. Asha Wasnik, was elected Sarpanch of Amla Gram Panchayat. Under her leadership, numerous developmental projects have been implemented, enhancing the quality of life within the Gram Panchayat. Today, Abhay and his family live a dignified and prosperous life, embodying resilience and determination.
Conclusion
Abhay Wasnik’s story is a testament to the transformative power of community mental health initiatives. The support from GASVS not only facilitated Abhay’s recovery but also empowered him to build a sustainable livelihood, thereby enhancing his family’s socioeconomic status. The Wasnik family’s journey accentuates the importance of mental health support, accessible mental health services and the potential for recovery and success with appropriate intervention and community backing.
